PCD

PCD (polycrystalline diamond) is a synthetically manufactured diamond for industrial usage. PCD is different to single crystal synthetic diamond in its crystal structure since this is not monocrystalline but polycrystalline. Strictly speaking polycrys-talline diamond is a composite material consisting of single diamond particles which are embedded in a cobalt matrix. The diamond content in this case is about 90%.

PCD-tipped tools find their application in milling, drilling, turning and reaming of non-ferrous and heavy metals. Tools with cutting edges of polycrystalline diamond are also increasingly used for processing composite materials (fiber and filler reinforced composites), such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and glass-fiber reinforcing plastic (GFRP) in the aerospace industry since it depends on extremely sharp and wear-resistant cutting edges especially in these materials. In addition, the machining of sintered solid carbide, ceramics and glass is possible.

CVD

CVD-Diamonds are produced by the chemical vapor deposition. The advantage compared to polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is the high purity (99% diamond content) of the diamond layer and the resulting higher hardness and wear resistance. The hardness of CVD-D is therefore almost identical to the hardness of single crystal synthetic diamond, but not anisotropic, so not depending on the direction.

Tools with tipped CVD thick film segments have the same field of application as PCD tipped tools. With the difference that they have up to three times higher lifetime and sharper cutting edges. With CVD-D tools, very high surface finish is possible which were previously only possible with single crystal synthetic diamond tools. So the CVD tools can be seen as the all-rounders of the diamond tools and cutting material of the future, which will usher in a new era of cutting.

CBN

Due to the search for a comparable hard material to diamond polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) also commonly known as cubic boron nitride (CBN) was created. CBN is a synthetically produced composite cutting material and has approximately more than half of the hardness of diamonds. In this case, the cubic boron nitride is embedded in a ceramic binder phase.

CBN is used both as an abrasive in grinding wheels as well as a cutting material for inserts and segments. In field of application CBN is very different from that of diamond tools due to its other physical and mechanical properties. Unlike the diamond cutting materials previously mentioned CBN has no affinity to carbon. Further advantages compared to diamond are the higher toughness and higher heat resistance of this cutting material. Therefore, CBN is suitable for the machining of cast iron materials and hardened steels.
